Unisa Online Application has re-opened Date: Here’s how you can apply

You still have time to find a course of study

If you are considering enrolling for a university degree but fear you’ve left it too late, fear not. The University of South Africa has re-opened the Unisa Online Application process for first-time undergraduate students.

For this week, students can apply to courses that offer an ‘Open Distance Learning’ programme of study. You can do your degree online with the Pretoria-based university, and it provides an excellent alternative for those who can’t afford travel and accommodation fees.

How do I start the Unisa Online Application process?

You have two choices here. If you are able to get to the Pretoria campus, they are now accepting walk-in applications at Unisa’s service centres. The more common route is, surprisingly enough, to complete the process online from anywhere you can get internet access from.

This is the link you need to follow to begin your application.

What is Open Distance Learning (ODL)?

You are effectively the master of your own destiny. It is an online degree which doesn’t require you to attend lectures. You can study from anywhere you want, but you must be aware that the course material will be uploaded thick and fast, and you’re expected to go at the same pace as university attendees.

You still have access to tutorial support, counselling, and helpful services that present students get. It’s just that you have to take responsibility and manage your own studies. If you apply yourself, you can really take control of how you learn.

What can I study at Unisa?

There are seven broad subject areas that you can choose to undertake. There is a multitude of courses available in each field, but these are the vocations you can decide to study:

  • Accounting Sciences
  • Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
  • Economic and Management Sciences
  • Education
  • Human Sciences
  • Law
  • Science, Engineering and Technology

What qualifications do I need to apply for Unisa?

For each of the seven fields of study on offer, there is a different education criterion. In some cases, a Senior, or National Senior Certificate may not be enough to get on your chosen course. Alternatively, the university does accept other qualifications if you haven’t received certain certificates or matric results.

What documents do I need to apply to Unisa?

For the Unisa Online Application, only upload the required documents as individual files and not a complete set of documents as one file.

  • Copy of your school qualifications (eg Senior Certificate)
  • Copy of your official tertiary academic record(s) (if applicable) (internet copies will not be accepted)
  • Copy of your ID document (RSA students) or ID/passport (international students)
  • Copy of your marriage certificate (if applicable) or divorce decree (if applicable)
  • Sworn translations of documents if they are not in English or Afrikaans
  • Files must not be larger than 2MB (2048KB) each.
  • Only black and white documents may be submitted.
  • Only the following file types are allowed: PDF (Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format file), DOC (Word document file) or TIF (image file)

How does the application work?

You visit this page, familiarise yourself with what you want to study, then upload your supporting documents after you’ve chosen your course. Once you’ve completed that, you are literally a few steps away from cementing your place with Unisa

1) Visit www.unisa.ac.za/paymentinfo for banking details and payment information.

2) Pay the R105 fee for your online application. That fee rises to R160 if you’re submitting hard copy applications in person.

3) Use the student number you receive from Unisa AND the application fee reference number (ie STUDENT NUMBER 5370810030) after they have emailed you details on how to proceed.

When is the deadline for the Unisa Online Application?

You have until Friday 19 January to submit your application. We urge that you don’t leave it until the 19th, however. As we saw with TUT and UJ, there is no guarantee the university can accept late applications. So no procrastinating, here!
